As explained on the official Darwin Day website, Darwin Day is a worldwide celebration of science held the 12th of February, the day that Charles Darwin was born in 1809. Specifically, it commemorates the life of Charles Darwin. He was the first man who understood the importance of natural selection in biological evolution and described it with scientific rigor. More generally, Darwin Day expresses gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge has contributed to the advancement of humanity. Such knowledge is acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity and thus Darwin Day celebrates the curiosity and ingenuity in all of us.
